The story of the house
For centuries, our stretch of Virmenska Street was known as Bakers’ Street.
Two old houses stand here side by side. No. 4 was first recorded in the town’s tax registers in 1535; at the end of the 16th century it belonged to a shoemaker named Obukh, and it is still known by his name. In the 17th century, No. 6 next door belonged to an Armenian priest.
In No. 4, a rebuilding left its date on a ceiling beam: 20 March 1722, carved back to front, probably because the carver laid his pattern the wrong way round. After a fire in 1848, the house was rebuilt; around 1909 it was linked inside to No. 6, and by 1927 a city guide listed a hotel here, the Ziemiański. Since September 2013, it has been Rudolfo.
